Keeping Your Faith Through Life

Keeping Your Faith Through Life
By: Alexa Barnette
Sometimes life can put you in a questioning spot. Should I stay with my faith? Or should I follow a path of no religion? In my mind, I have always thought about ideas like this, but never really knew what to do. Over the years though, I have come to the conclusion that I should stay on the path of my faith.

"He replied, 'Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain 'Move from here to there,' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.'" (Matthew 17:20).  In this Bible verse it shows how with faith you can do amazing things. Now obviously if you believe in God and his son Jesus, you aren't going to be able to magically tell a mountain to move. I mean lets get real, us humans can't do that. But you know what we can do with our faith? Keep it and spread the word. As Christians we are taught to learn the word and spread it all around  the world for everyone to know. We can do this if we keep our faith and stay strong with it. Matthew 17:20 is actually one of my favorite Bible verses because it shows that if you have faith in the Lord, you can do anything, and be anything. The verse expresses how your faith can put you on a better path.

As a child, I didn't grow up around a very religious family. We went to church on holidays, and with friends, but my family didn't go that often. It was sort of hard in my family though, I was Greek Orthodox, my mom was Methodist/Baptist, and there weren't any churches with both religions. For awhile we would switch off. One time we would go to Old Bethel Methodist Church and once we would go to the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. But, after some time things in my faith just seemed to stop. I stopped going to Church, Sunday School, and Greek School. For awhile, nothing seemed to happen in my religious point of view. In fact, for a moment I didn't even think about God, except when praying every now and then.

Everything change when I had my first day of school at Trinity Lutheran School. With a Bible in my backpack, I took my first steps into a Lutheran school. I was totally new to everything. I didn't even know the Lord's Prayer then. But something happened, it's like it clicked. This is where I need to be, with faith. So I learned more and more about the Bible, becoming more with my faith. When I started at Holy Cross, my faith grew even stronger. It was even more memorable. I still remember classes with Pastor Sattler in 5th grade. Its amazing how strong your faith can get in only a few years.

Always keep your faith and fight for it when at times it is being challenged. In the story of Esther, her faith as a Jew was put to the test, but she stuck by it and survived. Click here to learn more about her story. Faith is a big step in life, but I believe if you can hang on to it, you can do anything.

Bang Bang! (Genetics)

Hello! So, my awesome teacher Mrs. Mc has assigned the challenge of creating a genetics rap. Three girls and I plan on creating a rap to the beat of Bang Bang! by Jessie J, Ariana Grande, and Nicki Minaj. My sections are mainly focused on Mitosis (except for the chorus), so I hope you enjoy learning about the process of Mitosis! It's not all finished yet, but I got most of the parts done, enjoy!

Rough draft:

Mitosis occurs in body cell
which is uh, diploid cell
This undergoes cell division
forming two diploid cell (oh)

(You’ve been waiting for that…
Mitosis, process)
Mitosis divides parent cell
Into two identical daughter cells (oh)

Genes genes chromosome (I know you have em)
Genes genes chromosomes (can’t live without them)
Wait a minute you have brown hair
Brown hair is dominant
Genes genes there are so many (like recessive)
Genes genes and many more (like dominant)
Wait a minute you have blonde hair
Blonde hair is recessive

Mitosis produces asexually
which means you only need one parent cell
You don't need no sperm or egg
Just one parent cell

(you been waiting for that..
Mitosis process)

Now here is my groups final lyrics:

Mitosis occurs in body cell
which is uh, diploid cell
This undergoes cell division
forming two diploid cells (oh)
(You’ve been waiting for that…
Mitosis, process)
Mitosis divides parent cell
Into two identical daughter cells (oh)
(Chorus)
Genes genes and chromosomes (I know you have em)
Genes genes and chromosomes  (Can’t live without em)
wait a minute you have Brown hair (ah)
That's because its dominate (ah)
Genes genes and chromosomes (I know you have em)
Genes genes and chromosomes  (Can’t live without em)
Dominant takes over (ah)
in Punnett squares

Punnett squares are when you
can figure out your DNA (oh)
take your parents genes and
it will tell you about your Traits (Oh yeah)
Not everybody looks the same because of your DNA
Genotype is inherited genes from your parents. (oh)

Genes genes and chromosomes (I know you have em)
Genes genes and chromosomes  (Can’t live without em)
wait a minute you have Brown hair (ah) q
That's because its dominate (ah)
Genes genes and chromosomes (I know you have em)
Genes genes and chromosomes  (Can’t live without em)
Dominant takes over (ah)
in Punnett squares

It's guanine and cytosine
It's adenine and thymine
together and get your nucleobases
they work and make proteins
If you mess them up you get a mutation
it happens with an extra chromosome, somewhere in the body
cancer is common, issues within muscles, and genetic disorders happen

It's  me, Mo, Carm, and Lex
Chromosomes in a body
From a producing cell gamete
Gamete is a diploid
dividing to a haploid
4 haploid cells forming
half the number of chromosomes
In the process of meiosis
G-to the E- to the N- to the O
T- to the Y- to the P- to the E-
See anybody could teach you
You need science to blow your mind your mind

Genes genes and chromosomes (I know you have em)
Genes genes and chromosomes  (Can’t live without em)
wait a minute you have Brown hair (ah)
That's because its dominate (ah)
Genes genes and chromosomes (I know you have em)
Genes genes and chromosomes  (Can’t live without em)
Dominant takes over (ah)
in Punnett squares

Genes genes and chromosomes (I know you have em)
Genes genes and chromosomes  (Can’t live without em)
Genes genes genes genes genes genes genes genes genes genes genes genes

Genes genes and chromosomes (I know you have em)
Genes genes and chromosomes  (Can’t live without em)
This is the song
About…genes!

Background:
When making this video, we decided that for pictures we would have a variety to go with our words. We first used a picture of the Mitosis process. Then we went into a little dance break and included pictures about genes and chromosomes. We also added a picture of Mrs. Taylor when talking about brown hair :). We included a picture of the meiosis process, and then added another dance break. When the beginning of the rap comes on, we put lyrics for a little help to sing along. We added pictures of Punnett squares and more of Mrs. Taylor. We ended out the song with a cool pose too.

So this was the process of creating our genetic rap and video! I had lots of fun making it with my group and want to make a special thanks to Mrs. Taylor for being our special guest appearance. So without a further or do I present to you Gene Genes! By Alexa, Naya, Carmen, and Morgan.

Holy Cross engineering project

Holy Cross is a warm safe environment to be in. Some strengths are that we have wonderful staff, who are passionate about learning and God. We have both a middle school, elementary school, and a preschool. We have a church with us so we get to go to chapel on Wednesday. We have a play ground that is great for the little kids, but sadly some of elementary, and middle school don't get to enjoy they playground like they do. Middle schoolers found a game that they like, called Gaga. Gaga is a fun game involving a gaga pit. Teaching kids is easy to do we just have to be able to build it. After that it is lots of fun!

This is what the pit would look like

Another problem is the middle school lockers. Now that we share lockers for backpacks there is no room. A way to fix that is by getting hooks to put our backpack and lunch boxes on. It will help things get spaced out keeping things separate. It is more space then the tiny little lockers, that don't have enough room for all those bags.

This is what the hooks could possibly look like

Another possible problem is the doors locking. It gets tough when we have to stand at the door for so long waiting for someone to unlock it. Sometimes there isn't even a person there to unlock the door. I think a solution for that is to have a code, that we learn and can type in for easy access.

Xenon

On July 12, 1898, Sir William Ramsey and Morris M. Travers discovered the element Xenon. Xenon was discovered shortly after their discovery of krypton and neon. They found xenon in the residue of left over components of liquefied air. This experiment of liquefied air is what caused them to figure out the element of xenon.

Xenon can be found in strobe lights, xenon lights, and types of car head lights. While xenon is an element, it can be paired with multiple other elements like fluorine, platinum, and oxygen, creating compounds.

Xenon has 54 protons and electrons, and 77 neutrons. Xenon is in period 5 because the electrons occupy five rings. Xenon is part of group 18 because it is a Noble gas. Xenon is usually unreactive, but sometimes can have chemical reactions, such as the formation of xenon and hexafluoroplatinate. Other wise it is like most noble gases, unreactive.

Fun Facts:
  • Xenon produces brilliant white flashes of light when it is excited electrically and is widely used in strobe lights.
  • The light emitted from xenon lamps are used to kill bacteria and power ruby lasers
  • Due to the high atomic weight, xenon ions were used as a fuel in experimental ion engine aboard the space probe Deep Space 1.
  • Xenon gases has recently been used in fireworks
